What is a Vimshottari dasha? The clock behind your seasons

A clock made of planets
The Vimshottari dasha is a cycle of nine planetary periods that adds up to exactly 120 years. Where the clock starts depends on the Moon: the nakshatra, or lunar mansion, the Moon occupied at your birth decides which planet's chapter was running first, and how much of that chapter remained.
Each chapter has a fixed length in the classical scheme. The Sun gets six years, the Moon ten, Mars seven, Rahu eighteen, Jupiter sixteen, Saturn nineteen, Mercury seventeen, Ketu seven, and Venus twenty. Add those up yourself: 120.
Chapters nest inside chapters. A mahadasha, the major period, divides into antardashas, or sub-periods, and those divide again into pratyantardashas. The proportions follow the same year-counts, so a Mercury stretch inside a Venus chapter runs at a different pace than a Saturn one. That nesting is why a single day can feel like a quiet room inside a loud house: a Mars sub-period inside a Mercury chapter reads differently from a Saturn one.
What each chapter is "about"
The tradition gives each planet a texture. Mercury chapters are the season of correspondence, commerce, and analysis. Saturn chapters favor patience, structure, and long accounts. Jupiter is the counselor's season, Venus the season of ease and negotiation. Lineages differ on the details, which tells you something useful: these are readings agreed on by long practice, not measurements anyone can put a number on.
